Red rimmed eye rick was the present, someone important to him probably died and the plan didn't go well.
The raid was the past, the flash forward to when rick was old is not necessarily the future, but something rick envisioned. The leg injury is from the comic.
The start of the raid itself was just like the comic, the only thing they added that was new was gabriel being in the same room with negan and what appeared to sound like thumps from the bat.
From the comics, all out war would be finished in like 1 or 2 episodes, so I'm expecting it to be drawn out. Wanted more out of the episode, but I understand why they did it that way.
The season 1 throwbacks were a nice touch as well, you can see some of them here - https://imgur.com/a/EO6rs

You could interpret it in 2 ways, his vision of the future:

-red eyes because of the despair because someone in his picture of it is missing
-red eyes because someone not in the picture died, but very close to him, and he's holding on to that picture of the future for hope.

One might be more plausible than the other, but i find no good reasons to exclude either one.

There is a third less likely scenario; he's gone bonkers again because he killed a bunch of people.

Just speculating here, but maybe Rick's reason for sparing Negan would have something to do with the time Carl spent with him.

Him being the leader of the pack and the fact that he had some screw ups might explain why rev. pulled him out and that he was able to be open to that. It fits with his character development up to that point in the tv series. I don't know how well it follows the comics though.

Hmm, based on this I think I may have misinterpreted the previous post. When DCSS talked about Rick sparing Negan, I assumed he was referring to after Negan was defeated and Rick would jail Negan instead of killing him.

But if he meant episode one where Gabriel pulled Rick away from firing, then I wouldn't really consider Rick as having spared Negan in that moment. More so it was a wise tactical choice to retreat rather than risk staying to fire when the shots weren't being very effective. Gabriel thought that Rick's choice to continue firing rather than retreating (as was the plan) was bad strategy caused by emotion. Rick's choice to defer to Gabriel's judgement indicated a growing trust.
