That would be a good reason to do it (remember they smelled humans in first season, however in second season they got rid of that idea it seems as when they were hiding under the cars in episode one the zombies didn't smell them), to me it was just him going full red neck and collecting trophies of the zombies he killed. If the blood from those got in one of his cuts I'm sure that is enough to infect him. Was just dumb imo to even do that.
