Still don't care for Eugene either way, sooner his story arc ends the better.
It was a really well-done episode. It had comic relief while still building tension. We're now seeing Eugene becoming something more than just a clown. My guess is this venture will go towards where Eugene went in the comics. He becomes much more confidant and irreplaceable. His ability to make bullets, synthesize chemicals, etc. goes a long way in rebuilding civilization after the all-out-war between the Saviors and Rick's group.
You can't really establish Eugene as an important, central character without seeing how he survives on his own in a hostile environment.
