They try desperately to make it look like someone can actually beat him.
In reality he just punches through their chest before they can even react to his speed.
It's the one problem I have with this show.
Yeah except he needs to train somehow to be fast enough to fight other speedsters or people where a regular punch does nothing, also after image made for a much much cooler end fight than just oh look I punched you.

In the last episode of season 1, Eobard Thawne (Wells 1) is about to travel through the portal back to his home. He sees Jay Garrick's helmet come flying out which spurred him to say "that's my cue to go." This may have seemed like just a hype moment for season 2 to most, and maybe it was, but it certainly seems like more after S2E5. From this I think are some key points:
1) Thawne knows who Jay Garrick is and that he is the Flash. He recognizes the helmet and it obviously bears significance to him.
2) A little inference here but we now know Garrick is weaker than Barry, so Thawne isn't going because he is scared of Garrick, he is in a rush to leave because he knows Zoom is coming. It's been established Zoom is after all speedsters good and evil, so Thawne knows he is in danger.
Or he saw something come through the portal and realized he needed to leave before it was too late. The object could have been anything, it just happened to be jays helmet.
