I agree on john snow, he's the most bland, stereotyped character in there. Hes's the one son who's the most like his boring father, without the life experience an wartime hardening. Of course he wasn't 'war time hardened' when the story began. This story was written to be started by a 14-year old. The things he has done and will be doing coming up definitely qualify as 'war time hardening'.
If GRRM didn't write in stereotypical protagonists, then he wouldn't be able to surprise us when things go awry for them. Part of shattering the audience's expectations is to start out by giving people what they have come to expect over years of previous reading/watching experience.
