Nah, on rare occasions perfection is continued right to the end.
Deadwood.
The Wire.
Here's why I think this case is different than those:
1) One of the main plot mechanics was the characters who first started suspecting something "supernatural" were not believed when they tried to tell the other main characters. This can not be recreated with a direct sequel. Even if new characters emerge and have to be convinced, it doesn't have the same social dynamic. Already having a core of chars who know about the shadow realm is different than one person thinking they are alone seeing strange stuff.
2) The Lucas/Michael squabbling dynamic won't really be the same. After what just happened, there's no way the 4 boys would really be at each other's throats again. It would have been been much easier to recreate this drama if the story had waited 5+ years for the next chapter to begin. But at the immediate future, their bond is just going to be too strong.
3) One reason the show was so addicting was because the audience had no idea what was happening and were only figuring it out slowly. Now that we know about the shadow realm, the show is going to have to dig deeper to find an aspect of mystery. They are probably going to do lame stunts like have the main chars go in a hunting party in the shadow realm. It would have been much easier for S2 to recreate the greatness if it was starting from a clean slate with a new mystery.
The last episode was a finale. It was a big blowout bash where all the cards got laid on the table. This is different from S1 of The Wire and Deadwood, which I'm sure were written with second seasons in mind.

Give it a chance.
Don't get me wrong, I loved S1 and will absolutely watch S2. But the way things are set up, it is tailor made to be a disappointing sequel.
