They said they thought they would have 100 more years to fix that problem, I don't know what that meant. Maybe there are parts of The Ark which can be converted over time?

I find it strange they would only have shuttle for 700, they must have had more than that amount first migrate to the Ark in the first place.

Nah if you think about it, population climbing to 2,300 or so in like 40 years is possible. The fixing it in 100 years part I think is they knew there was an issue, that they would quickly expand population wise beyond the capacity for the shuttles. But they were obviously in a rush to finish the station seeing as there was a nuclear war and it was either hurry or die. It wasn't a critical issue at the moment so they just assumed over the next 100 years whole they were on the station they'd be able to find a way to get everyone down to earth with or without the shuttles.

But someone fucked up seeing as only the ex chancellor and current chancellor had any knowledge of the problem.

True, I guess nuclear war would be a fair reason to leave now and worry later. I just wonder how many people actually first populated the Ark, because it looks huge

The original survivors numbered around 400, spread across the space stations of 12 nations. Over three generations, the survivors combined the 12 stations and thousands of satellites into The Ark, and their population grew to 2094, stretching life support to the breaking point.

I think an important fact here is though there wasn't a rush
iirc they spent ~97 years in space (after some point of the war, not sure if start or end or what)
So in those ~97 years they just let the population grow out of control so that they only had shuttles/dropships for less than half the population for when the time came to achieve their goal of going back to Earth
Hundreds of people weren't all born in the same year around the start of the nuclear war (referring to the space stations, not Earth)
Then they thought in another 100 years (on top of the ~97) they could "figure out a solution"

Somebody here mentioned maybe they'll modify the station to send it down to Earth somehow
I could maybe see that happening in the show

They might also just leave some of the population up in space to keep on living as they have been
I think "essential personnel" (for going down to Earth) might have to be redefined though because they would need to either train or keep people up there to maintain the Ark and provide necessary services / expertise

Well considering the one child per household rule that is in place, the population will not grow like that, I mean sure there will be a temporary spike when the children are born but every generation will see a reduction in population. Over 100 years it is easy to see 2000 drop to around 1000 without killing people, but instead having strict population control(which they do).

Might wanna check the math though. There are older people on the ark, grandparents I would imagine, and even great grandparents. They don't die as soon as they have a child.
