I find it strange how tertiary characters and extras always take their death much better than primary characters. When a nobody character dies, they are tough until the end, spitting curses like "f*** your ass, you Roman c***", or something like that. Whereas, primary characters are always sobbing, emotional as hell, and trying to make it clear to the killers that they're doing a horrible thing and killing very beloved characters.
I understand that this is supposed to be a reflection of the audience's reaction. The audience isn't that heart broken when a tertiary or extra character dies, but they are devastated when a main character dies. Still, I think that, in a way, it diminishes the main character.
If you're talking about crixus, then for someone who tries to overanalyze things, you seem to not have understood the point of the scene. His lover was forced to watch him get decapitated. If Crixus had died on his own in the battlefield, the death would've been a lot different.
