Was it ever explained why walker bites kill people?

I remember them saying they all have the virus in them and it doesn't take over til you die but I don't remember them saying how a bite makes you die and turn.

Infection most likely, since they're riddled with God knows what.

Pretty sure a bad scratch from a walker could also cause the change.

No. Everyone is already infected. A zombie bite causes a infection due to the bacteria present in the human mouth, not the virus. Their immune systems are compromised due to whatever the zombie virus/bacteria is, so it makes them more susceptible to illnesses. Which is why they get a fever when they get bitten. It's why the flu almost killed so many of them and did kill many of them (the group)

Kirkman has explained this many times, don't know how people still aren't aware of this.
