Hodor dying, whether you liked the character or not is pretty much the saddest thing that has happened in the show so far.
Hodor is basically the only innocent main character to date and he suffered arguably the most, especially with the way he died/probably knew exactly when he would die for his entire life(maybe).
Either way, similar to how Gwen Stacey's death marked the end of innocence in comics/the silver age of comics, hodors death kind of means the same for the game of thrones world.
Edit: basically, winter has officially taken its first innocent life.
Hodor's death is similar to Dobby dying in Harry Potter. Both loyal serving, selfless beings who serve a protagonist who have let people die for them before they realize they need to step up.
