For anyone who is sceptic of carl surviving a headshot like that, there are multiple instances of people surviving such a thing on record. One such case had a bullet enter the skull and it followed a trajectory along the inside of the dome of the skull without doing too much braindamage or hitting big arteries. Lucky as hell but still not something that is science fiction.

He got shot in the face, deflected off bone and ruptured his globe. Goodbye eye but not a vascular emergency unlike a rifle shot to the abdomen

they do have a doctor
and equipment

much better than older times in history where your doctor was just appointed / passed down through families
then they throw some mud and crushed up leaves on your wound and expect it to heal

also for the longest time sterilization techniques werent used.. most people died from infection after wounds not from having the wounds

so i think its very believable he lived from where he was shot

you're right antibiotics have massively improved our over all life expectancy to the point that the most prevalent diseases are those related to having it too good and living longer like {cardio}vascular diseases and resp. cancer.

Very true. However, to play devils advocate.....overuse of antibiotics has also led to more resistant strains of bacteria.
