I don't think Jamie is villainous at all. Yes he was an entitled prick at the start, and the audience is basically tricked into rooting for the Starks, and he is a Lannister so we are supposed to hate him. But I think the show doors a really good job at showing there isn't really a good or bad side. There are just sides who are against eachother. I mean obviously cersei is a crazy bitch, but the people under her don't share those characteristics (for the most part). The people are just trying to defend their Kingdom, doing what they think is right. Even Jamie.
Actually the guests on Thronecast were discussing something similar on the show after last sunday's episode. They were actually discussing how well the show has managed character development for the so called baddies and how even the most twisted of characters have all gone through tormenting circumstances before arriving at who they are today. Even Cersie, psycho as she may be, (side note - Lena Heady has fucking killed it from the start, amazing in her role) She still has a whole past life of completely horrible circumstances that have made her who she is today.
I see your point too, kinda like 'all's fair in love and war' - That's where Jaime is at right now imo, he knows his sister is bonkers but he's still doing what he thinks is right to win the war and bring peace to the kingdom under her rule - his response to Bronn questioning the likelyhood of peace - "stranger things have happened" - he has belief in what he's doing.
Even so, there are definitely villainous characters, perhaps Jaime isn't one of them.. i guess i've just thought of him in that way ever since he pushed Brann out of that window. But he's an interesting character and i still root for him so go figure.
Littlefinger - Villainous yea?
