Imo this fight happened too soon.

Oberyn's a badass
The Mountain's a badass.

We should have witnessed them fight 2-3 proper warriors before seeing such an epic battle. Instead all we saw was the Mountain killing a few peasants and Oberyn stabbing a Lannister soldier. I'm sure there are chapters in the books dedicated to the events/fights each of those men have fought previously.

If Oberyn had won it would be like.. "meh, so this mountain guy was just huge, not so tough".

My guess is they wanted to wait to show off his skills for the fight as part of the mystery because several people know of his reputation as a fighter, but never saw him actually fight (I think Tyrion and/or Jaime even commented on this). The actor had training by a Wu-Shu master. Gotta give the man props on pullin off them moves.

Someone mentioned maybe someone from dorne who might be stronger than the Viper. The strongest in dorne is called Darkstar, but we've seen him directly for only 5 or 6 pages worth in 5 books so far. He might be the best in westeros though.

Why do I love Darkstar so much? It's pretty simple when I think about it. Darkstar isn't just the best character in the series, he might just be the greatest character of all time.
