I was thinking about that school bus that was right in front of them...

perhaps one could have hid inside while the other got 'away' and later on try to distract the zombies so the guy inside could get away too... not sure how it would work though, just an idea.

but i think his logic was zombies prefer live food, and chubby would make a better distraction on the ground crawling for life over laying there dead

If they didn't waste so much time laying on the floor talking and walking slowly + looking behind them they both could of got away.

E: Also I'm sure they could of some how trapped the zombies inside the school leaving them free to escape
