I think Hoffman was great, Phillip that is, but he didn't hold a candle to Ralph Fiennes or even Edward Norton in Red Dragon. And to go a bit further, comparing their bodies of work, all three respectively, I'd probably put him at the bottom. I loved him in Scent of a Woman, and Capote, but that's about it for where he's brilliant. In my opinion anyway, no harsh feelings.
He's brilliant in every film.
The ones you mention are good, sure, but notable performances also include: The Master, Jack & Connie, Synecdoche, New York, Owning Mahowny, Punch-Drunk Love, Magnolia, Happiness and Boogie Nights.
The only reason nerds don't care about him is because they prefer Inception to The Master and I get that, I really do but the fact that PSH chose interesting projects rather than stuff with extreme mainstream appeal doesn't discredit him as an actor.
