I think the discs just connect your mind to the virtual world, and since the mind is what controls pain, you no longer feel that physical pain any more since there is no pain being dealt to you in the virtual world.
Then even after you die, your consciousness is still a living thing of its own so it can stay alive outside the real world.

Basically murder the entire planet and everyone lives online.
