What I'm trying to get at is: did the phone call serve one purpose or two?

So even if you don't think that the call was Walter trying to save her by getting her off the hook with the law (which it very clearly was), you still give him kudos for basically tearing her apart and telling her to keep her bitch mouth shut?
I didn't say that he wasn't trying to make her look less guilty. I said we could toss that one 'illegal' comment off as a minor thing. My question was if there was more to the phone call than just that. Was he actually upset that Skylar told Walt Jr.? Was he really trying to send a message by taking the baby?

Walter took the baby as a pure impulse because he couldn't believe he just lost his family, and wanted to salvage what part of it he could. He clearly realized it was a shitty move afterwards, and gave it to the fire department so they could get it back to her.
If that's how you frame the move (which may be correct) then that makes me like Walter less. I'm used to him making seemingly crazy moves that are part of a grand orchestrated plan. If a second purpose of the phone call, in addition to making her appear less guilty, was ALSO to send a message to Skylar (if you cross me I will take your daughter) then that would make me like him more.
It would have parallels with the Brock scenario, but more dramatic since it's his daughter. Here, he takes his own daughter (he feels confident she will come to no harm, but lets Skylar believe otherwise). In that case, he poisoned Brock, but felt confident Brock wouldn't die. It served only to send a message to Jesse (although the message appeared to have been sent from Gus).
