you never watched batman TAS? i'm sure you can guess what it is by the name. the wounded/dead go in the pit and come back out healed. they also come out temporarily insane (except for the joker who went in insane and came out sane)

so is it a one time thing or can you go in the pit multiple times? and where is this pit?

You can go in it several times (from what I gathered in the Son of Batman movie)

most pits you only can go into once, it brings healing powers and anti aging powers however you come out insane (except the joker went into it once and he was sane). if you enter one completely healthy it will most likely kill you, there has been one made by nyssa that she can enter more then once
