Only way? I said it was the best choice they had at the moment.
Most likely the wolves, or another group that they have yet to introduce.
Those suggesting an inside job, that would be insanely stupid for these characters to endanger everyone deliberately like that just to weed off the weak or prove a point. It's goes contrary to every bit of who and what they are.

I think it was the Wolves as well. Might have had some scouts setup and saw what was going down and warned their group.

Werent there tractors where glenn was? Set something up with a blade at the front and literally mow the zombie lawn.

Not saying rick's way is bad, but there's honestly a ton of ways to deal with that shit.

While the zombies were stuck in the mine, they coulda made bombs and just bombed the living shit out of them. Coulda bombed em on the streets too.

Also why the fuck are they using guns so much. Why not spears? 4 pointed fish spears so you can silently kill them from safe range. Keep guns and ammo for absolute necessity.

As if every vehicle is loaded with gas and ready to just fire right up after 2 years of sitting dead. Bombs would also draw a ton more zombies than some gunshots. Not like they have shown that they have bomb making materials either.

Tractor blade won't kill 20,000. Bodies pile up.
That many bombs is far too many resources. I doubt they have them.

Rick's idea still the best.

The only alternative to Rick's idea would be running them off a cliff somehow. Herd mentality would make them all walk right off.
Still, 20000 bodies is a lot for 1 cliff.

Bombs draw other zombies and unless they're extremely explosive, I'm talking incinerates everything to ash within the field of the blast, they're pointless for zombies.
Not to mention even having them in the first place. It's not like bombs grow on trees.

A tractor blade would break down after the first few thousand, not to mention the build up of bodies, the lack of fuel. The size of that horde, a large piece of equipment that moves slow would've been overwhelmed and rendered useless within minutes.

So we have 3 bad ideas suggested so far.

Blow them up with explosives they don't have and most likely wouldn't work to begin with.
Cut them up with a tractor they don't have, which wouldn't work.
Cut them up with razor wire they don't have, which wouldn't work.

Or they could shoot them from the canyon wall with limited ammo supplies.... owait.
Or they could ignore them.... since the truck fell it was clear ignoring them was the best choice, right?
I know, let's charge them for a melee fight with limited man power and inexperienced people!

Or they can lead them very far far away and hope that they're drawn to other noise sources.

Hm, looks like Rick's plan wasn't garbage after all.

Why isn't anyone considering it to be the priest that pressed the horn, it's an act of god after all that it all happened in the first place. He could just help this plan in the 'right' direction.

Gabriel is a coward. To even think he would be capable of that gives him far too much credit.
He'd run. But purposely screw up a plan that would put his own life in grave danger? he's a coward that survives, that kind of thinking goes against the established character.

As for building another wall. Given how quickly the truck fell, there would've been no way to get enough supplies out there and put up a wall strong enough to beat back that many walkers. If you paid attention to the episode, Rick went over why reinforcing the blockade was a bad idea.

did you mis the season finale where he didn't give a fuck about his safety or that of the town? he went out, decided to fraternize with the resurrected a bit by wrestling with them, came back and left the door open. He just took it to the next level.

Gabiel is apathetic now. He could definitely do it and just say "screw everyone"
