My memory may be failing me, but I can't think of an instance from the books where it talks about a dragon from having been killed in battle by enemy soldiers throughout the history of Westeros. The way that dragons are spoken of, they are pretty much regarded as the medieval equivalent of nuclear weapons.
I'm not saying the show is factually incorrect or that I disagree with their decision to portray Drogon like that. I thought the scene was adapted just fine. It did however, deviate from the spirit of what dragons represent in peoples' minds.
You read the books, I haven't, but in that episode, the girl was reading a book about a person trying to kill a dragon by hiding behind a mirror sheen shield, he did fail that attempt and die, is that also in the
books you read discussing the history of Westeros? Does the book state how the Dragons died? Was it in battle of Winter, before the Wall was built to protect against the Nightwalkers [or whatever they are called]?
Or, did the Dragons start dying off when Khalessi's race were dying off?
Don't really reply to those questions as a post, just think on it for yourself and that goes for other readers that have read the books.

Comparing Harry Potter dragons to GoT dragons is irrelevent. I personally liked the looks of the dragon in GoT, and how they showed it running to pick up speed using its' wings for momentum was pretty good,
whereas most other dragons in 99% of other shows can just flap their wings and up they go.
