You paint a nice picture, but I don't think Lori sorted things out in her head with that much depth. I don't think gratitude factored in. I think she was in a state of panic, grief and many other emotions all mixed together (cuz its the fucking apocalypse). Shane was there, he was something familiar and his dick felt good. He was protection, he was normalcy and everything between them just happened without her really thinking. At the CDC she gets a night to calm down and start processing things, but it's only brief. It isn't until the farm in S2 that she can really start thinking about her choices.
Shane, on the other hand, had probably been fantasizing about fucking Lori for years. It's only natural, guys fantasize about every attractive woman they come into contact with. The zombie apocalypse was a godsend in that sense. Rick disappears and Lori becomes vulnerable at the same time. Being the soldier-type, he naturally handles the apocalypse better than Lori. And any grief he had over losing Rick or other people is easier to swallow when it comes packaged with access to a hot cunt he's been dreaming about. Shane pointing the gun at Rick but changing his mind is evidence that he is in control and thinking things through from the beginning, unlike Lori.
Agree with a lot of what you say... I personally think if Shane had control, he would not have even aimed his rifle at Rick. He was in lust for Lori, and you are right, even episode one, it was his expression that seemed to give it away, but later on in the seasons, he stated he never thought of her like that when she was with Rick. And at the CdC... he just about raped her... if it wasn't for her scratching his neck, he most likely would have.
That is why this last season, Rick has NEVER been like Shane, which some people were comparing Ricks actions to being the same as Shanes' and he undoubtedly is not like the Govenor. I am still at the place that Carol has some fundamental issues that need looking at, I am just glad that Rick pulled himself away from that plan in the last episode... personally I would not have stated what the plan was though, I thought that was wrong... but hey... Morgan is to relieve him of his burdens I am thinking.
