Well considering the after show Lennie James himself said that Morgan has changed fundamentally for the positive; an event occurred that made him this way, he didn't leave them to die when he honked the horn he was doing it to see if it was safe to leave them there without walkers around. Also the use of a staff is pretty blatantly obvious as to his motives, its a tool for subduing not killing, contrasted with how we saw him last holed up in a building with knives, grenades, rifles, etc. He also says during the episode that every life is precious.
The final scene with him seeing Rick execute a man is showing the contrast between them now, one is willing to kill at the drop of a hat, the other is opposed to it.
I agree yeah, at first I thought he was leaving them to die, but then after seeing Lennie say how he was making sure it was safe, then connecting with that quote "All Life is precious".. Really does let you understand he wasnt trying to kill them.
Also think though they share very different beliefs in the post apoc era, morgan and rick will be fine, because they have empathy for eachother I mean just a few seasons back they were flip-flopped in eachothers shoes right now, morgan was a psycho and rick was more understanding, even to the point when morgan didnt remember him and wanted to kill him, he didnt kill morgan when opportunity arised.
