I think it's a great callback to the conversation Dale held at the farm in S2 when they were deciding what to do with the injured kid they had. What kind of humanity are we settling on here?
And Terminus touched on it again. When their motto (In this world, you are either the butcher or the cattle) was presented, the group seemed to reject it. Now, a few people are actually moving a little bit in that direction.
Was going to bring this up aswell, Dale's speech and then the actions they decided to chose after it kind of let you know alot of the old laws and morals of society are out the window as far back as S2... Not to mention the difference in time with being in this apocalypse and the psychological damage it causes, especially after encounters like Terminus and Woodburry..
imo humanity/moral code is out the window long ago, kind of saw hints of it at the beginning of S3 when Rick Machette'd that guys head over the assumption that he through a walker on him (even though he obviously did)... Taking no risks seems to be an effective way to stay alive in their situation.
