it could be that even without turning on the machine the Lightning wouldve striked him still
This is where the series has not explored into... without Dr Wells, the Flash would not have existed, BUT, the confrontation between The Flash and RF 15 years
ago would NOT HAVE happened, why, because RF would not have been the RF that created Star Labs.... so... the Flash would have not existed and in truth,
the RF would not have existed either.... basically none of the events from Barry's mother dying would ever exist, that is because "The Flash" was ever created,
thus, Dr Wells is the instigator and does NOT realise it.

Dr Wells only knew about the reporter because of his AI, this AI informs him of the current and future scenarios that could happen.
