GRRM said something about that in an interview a few years ago actually. The big ASOIAF fan site is run by a couple superfans who know the universe better than Martin does. He talks to them regularly and uses them as a resource to fact check and make sure he doesn't create conflicting plot points.
The thing that amazes me about his writing is how he can write such a wide variety of characters so well. A 70-year old man should not be able to get inside Arya's head well enough to make me develop romantic feelings for a fictional literary character.
A lot of it is just the dedication be puts into his work. I remember an interview with king one time where king was talking about how'd he set goals for himself to write say 10 to 30 pages in a day and he'd just sit there until it was done and whatever he had at the end of the day was what he'd go with. Martin was the opposite who said some days he'd write 3 to 5 pages and then realize something didn't work or it'd be too confusing or he just didn't like it and he'd end up scraping the entire thing. His dedication is insane, I know it takes him for fucking ever, but it's worth the wait for books that are so close to perfection and so damn intricate. Only thing that worries me is how he ends it. Some authors (king is the best example) just can't end a book to save their fucking life. I'm going to cry if it ends up being Dark Tower or It bad lol.
That's fanatic btw that he has that type of resource that he's not ashamed or hesitant about utilizing. Speaks loads to his character and the fact that he's so not pompous is probably why he's able to understand and fully create a connection between readers and his characters, even if the character is so far removed from who he is.
Truly an awe inspiring author and it gives me hope seeing something so grand, intelligent, and mythical garner the mainstream success it has. It's just nice seeing a book that doesn't intentionally try to just cater to the masses receive this level of recognition and hopefully it's inspiring a whole new generation of writers who inspire to tell the perfect story, rather than just selling books.
Can't praise him enough, I can't praise the people at HBO enough who've managed to remove so much content and yet still have kept the story true enough to the original that It's not only terrific for most people who have read the books, but it's also inspired thousands to actually go out and read something. So much hope and hype for this season.
