There is a reason the Hobbit went for CGI instead of following in LotRs footsteps.

^I think comparing the hobbit to lotr to determine if cgi is cheaper is a bit unfair. Paying hundreds of actors and giving them advanced makeup and costumes was obviously going to cost a lot but if you just need to make a model robot that only needs to be 6 inches tall it's not going to be too bad.
