Dwayne Johnson is actually really good in the roles he takes
Some of the movies he's in are questionable though

yea but some are perfect for him.
regardless he takes what is probably a shit movie and makes it watchable

really liked him in the run down, walking tall, snitch, faster... those suited him well.
i watched "the game plan" with my daughter and really liked his overall performance in that movie
my fav movie hes in tho is "be cool", lol i think he did an excellent job in that. him and vince vaughn really made that movie.

thats another good actor (or at least one i like) is vince vaughn.

After reading through some of this thread I think a few people have answered the OP right and others, while are not "wrong", may be moving away from the OP...

Looking through the lists, especially including my-own I realized we are throwing up a lot of personality actors as opposed to character actors..

and I got to thinking the OP was possibly more interesting in reading our lists of better than good CHARACTER ACTORS.

Can a personality actor be known as a better actor in general? (vs. amazing character actors)

or do the hybrids really stand out? (most of which are more the personality type)

A good actor imo is someone that sells both the character but also makes the situation seem believable. I think it takes a combination of acting skills as well as role awareness to be considered good/great, their acting background doesn't really matter. If they can make you suspend reality and believe in the world of the movie for a period of time then they are good.

good character actors?
John Goodman, Steve Carell, John Malkovich, John Turturro, Steve Buscemi, Danny Trejo, Gary Cole, PS Hoffman i think are all great, or at least fun to watch and believable if the movie is terrible (ie. con air, malkovich was amazing).

some honorable mentions are
Heath Ledger (that joker was just fucking amazing)
Matthew Mcconaughey (he was horrible for a lot of years but has really stepped it up. although he went more lead in a lot of stuff recently)

Tom hanks

Really? Not a single living actor who you'd consider "extremely good", but PSH makes the grade because he's dead? He was a fantastic actor, but there are plenty of actors who worked with him and who are still working that are equally as talented or better.
