It wasn't shown in the episode the actor that plays abraham explained during the talking dead that it was just like the comic. All we saw was the aftermath and it was clear why they left him. He scared them. I'm not saying it was a good idea, but that reasoning was pretty clear in the flashback when they were quivering as he approached them with blood on his hands.
Everyone has blood on their hands it seems. I think it's hard for you to say because you know the history and that might subconsciously affect how you watch the show, but from a naive viewer's stand point it was unclear what exactly the family was scared of. It became more clear they were scared of him later during the 2nd flashback with the note, but still no explanation of why. Some people are not capable of adapting to this new era and perhaps it could have been the simple act of him killing walkers that caused them to be frightened. Perhaps they shared Herschel's farm mindset that these zombies could be saved. Your information has revealed this may not be the case so it's a good thing we have you.
I think the flashbacks were a more interesting aspect of the show. They could have cut some of the actual present time footage and spent several more minutes on the flashback to make things clearer (and I think it would have been more interesting also).
