Did you watch the previous episodes? There was an episode where Damon and Stephen were looking for a witch that could break the sire bond between vampires. However, the witch revealed that that type of magic is dark magic and needs the sacrifice of 12 people. So the girl who sent the 12 hybrids to Klaus to slaughter is working for that mysterious professor who wants to unlock bonnie's dark magic potential by sacrificing 12 hybrids. (If 12 normal people can give you access to dark magic, what would 12 HYBRIDS do for you?)

dont forget in the very first episode the priest or whatever the guys name blew up 12 innocent people as well. and when the hunter read one of his letter ,it mention somehting about more of them are coming or whatever. Yea im starting to think the prof is one of the witches he is talkin about in his story about sylus . Could be a previous hunter/vampire/ doubt werewolf.

the new episode in Jan is about the original coming back.. hmm theres goin to be more twist now. they might be interested in the cure as well.

The dark magic is much more powerful than the magic that bonnie used to possess. The professor wishes to use this magic to free Silas.
