Yes, because the island would have an endless supply of food and water, the island wouldn't have anyone else on it to begin with.
The island would not attract other people that could be potentially dangerous.
Zombies won't be able to wash up on shore (they've shown zombies wash down river but a stationary island where there are tides that can pull bodies to and from? looks like the potential for the undead normandy invasion on your little island theory)
Not to mention actually getting to said island.

Did he? I doubt anything he could of said would address the issue. No point taking a fortified structure if you just destroyed all the fortifications while also attracting hundreds if not thousands of zombies.

The gov had the whole "if we can't have it no one can " mentality, dont know how that wasn't a red flag for the people he tricked into following him but whatever.

He didn't go into planning to destroy the prison, but with Rick telling him he can come back from the things he's done (which he called him a liar before he attacked hershel) and the death of Meghan.Those two factors are what set him off.

Didnt he see the girl after the fighting began?

She walked up a little after he killed Hershel, it appears that she witnessed the beheading. At this point they were just shooting back and forth. Only then did the Governor start the charge and they starting blowing things up indiscriminately and ripped down the fences.
