Dragonglass is obsidian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsidian) that just happens to have a magical properties against White Walkers. Aside from that, no one in Westeros would think anything special of it.
Dragonsteel (valyrian steel, Jon's sword) was forged with magical power to kill walkers. But even for someone who doesn't know/believe about its magical properties, it is still a very significant metal. A cynic would believe it to simply be an advanced alloy, as strong as any other metal but lighter, making it an awesome weapon. So it's basically magical titanium.
All of the cynical doubts about the origin of Dragonsteel are based in the doubt of Dragon's existence. Such as Jorah who says "that was 300 years ago Khaleesi, who knows what really happened" (paraphrased).
Since we know dragons are real there is no longer any doubt that dragon steel was created either with the cooperation of dragons or by dragon masters who found a way to magically replicate their fire.
Also Dragonglass is essentially obsidian in that i is made by lava, and dragon's evolved from fire wyrms. So both dragons and dragon glass have their origins in the heat from the center of Planetos.
