The reason it bombed at the box office is not because of it being R rated. There are plenty of R rated movies that succeed extremely well into the high hundreds of millions. It bombed because it's not a very good movie lol. And the characters are boring.
And that wasn't even my point. You can go on an on about Fast 9 and the last jedi. What I'm trying to say is that not many people went to see The Suicide Squad. The few that did go probably went because they're fans of the comics and what not, thus skewing the results in favor of enjoying the movie.
I'm telling you, it was pretty bad lol.
DC should honestly just stick to what they're great at. Steer away from trying to be as good as Marvel in the superhero department and make more movies like the Joker. Which suits their heroes better anyways, since Marvel has way cooler "superheroes". And they've nailed the market already.

Yet critics, fans, and the few people here who consistently review movies fairly disagree…. I think I’ll take that as opposed to your opinion of it being bad because the characters were “boring”. It’s honestly better than everything Marvel has done with the exception of maybe 3 or 4 films.
You, like most people, are probably content seeing the same movie over and over and over. I personally can’t fucking stand it. I’ll give Marvel credit where it’s due, there’s no one better at pandering to the masses than them. Funny enough, they learned a harsh lesson from this. They followed the same boring and overused formula that they always do for Star Wars, but the fans rejected it. It’s almost identical to every one of their Marvel movies, yet one is lauded as a masterpiece and the other trash. It’s almost like when put under even the slightest scrutiny, their fans realize how heavy handed and bland their content is.
Going back to box office though, the first Suicide Squad which was a steaming pile of dog shit, grossed almost 800M. Seeing as the other comparisons I did weren’t good enough for you, maybe that’ll work. You and plenty of others, really need to stop equating quality to box office success, cause they’re seldom the same. The same tired shit is what sells at the box office, with the occasional surprise hit. Anything that goes away from the mold tends to fall flat, even if it’s superior in almost every way.
The reason I referenced RT is because a lot of idiots, including on jsp think it matters. But I also provided Metacritic because meta is an actual good review aggregate website.
Now I'm not in the industry or anything but I think an R rated movie releasing in the middle of a global pandemic to movie theaters AND streaming services at the same time might have low box office numbers for reasons completely unrelated to how good or bad the movie is. 🤔
