Second season is already in the making and should be finished by next month, hopefully released on Netflix sometime next year, the sooner the better.

They may be able to draw out the fight long enough for the second season to come and go, but it's possible a pending lawsuit could push back the release date or even shut the show down entirely. Going to be a tough battle against Netflix's attorneys, but if a cost analysis shows it's easier to drop the show vs fighting these guys, they're going to drop it.

I don't know enough about the Church of Satan to have any fucking clue if they have a legitimate case, but I doubt they actually sacrifice people, practice necromancy or curse "mortals". I'll probably look into it at some point, but I can see them pulling a win in this fucked up day and age.

e: Iirc, I think they used some images/symbols directly from the real Church of Satan, which is a pretty big fucking no no. They should have just made everything up themselves and they wouldn't have an issue.

ee: ya, looks like they used an image of one of their gods directly from the real church in this show. Here's a quote from them.

"Given the show’s utilization of the Baphomet statue to represent an evil cannibalistic cult, a perception falsely associated with Satanism even in modern times, TST would have denied its use to the show creators,” he says. “Not only does it contradict what Baphomet represents, we owe it to those who identify with us to not allow this image, and by extension them, to be represented in this way.”

Seems like they have a strong chance imo. They need to cut the statue from the show, issue an apology and try to move past it.



For anyone curious, they've made three demands and say they'll refrain from litigation if those requests are met and they seem super fucking reasonable to me. Netflix should just comply. Seems like the church is just trying to protect their image, as odd as that may sound lol.

(1) take down any advertisements that features the likeness of the Baphomet monument; (2) take down and refrain from any use of the likeness from the ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ or any other works; and (3) produce an explanation behind the origins of the monument as used in the ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.’” The demand also notes that this matter could ideally be resolved without litigation, if they’re willing to comply with these requests.

I just think it is ridiculous how someone can sue a fiction TV show that is based on witches and magic.

I'm with ya, but ya can't steal an image of one of their gods and then throw it in your show. The requests seem pretty reasonable imo and if Netflix is reasonable in return, there shouldn't be an issue.

Part of me wants them to fight it to prove a point but I agree with you. They are going to just fix the issue and save money which is the logical choice.

They don't have a case. If it goes to court Netflix wins. All of the symbols pre-date the church of Satan. They have no claim to them.



Actually cursing mortals was a huge part of the start of the church of Satan in the 60s or whatever.

Apparently there is a belief that Jane Mansfield died due to one of these curses. She asked the high priest at the time (also the inventor of the religion) to curse her husband and he did. Jane was collateral damage in the curse.


Obviously all bullshit but still. The cults podcast has done really good stuff on the church of Satan if you're interested.

First satan is sued by Christians, now he's being sued by satnists, i read the article hopefully it's withdrawn, you can't copyright fiction. they may have something with that whole statue because it does look identical, and i don't mean shares a likeness. But 150 million eems outrageous and they could reshoot the scenes in a different location or CGI change the statue enough

I mean that imagery predates the church of Satan by like 100 years.
