May not be in your wheel house. There is sex and violence, but the action is understated and spends most of the time on the back burner to the narrative.
The show is called Penny Dreadful and is coming back for season 2 in April. So you can catch up on the first season.
Some notable characters such as Dorian Grey, Sir Malcolm Murray (the equivalent of Allen Quartermaine, albeit not as friendly or herolike) Victor Frankenstein and his monster, Abraham Van Helsing, Mina Harker.
Been compared to a darker version of the league of extraordinary gentlemen, though there's no mention of nemo yet and they aren't a league so to speak. There are vampires, a werewolf and an ancient evil for season 1.
It can be too dark for some people. Season 2 will focus further into dracula's origin story though he hasn't been referred to anything more than just the "master" who is really a pawn for something else. The show's creator said he wants to eventually explore Dr. Moreau and the Island of Lost Souls. Can't wait.
As for old school science fiction, try space and above and beyond. It's kind of like wing commander. Might be too low budget for you though, it's from the 90's.
There's almost human, with karl urban. Make sure you watch the episodes in order because fox pulled a firefly and aired them out of order (in a way that fucked up the narrative to anyone that paid attention)
Science fiction cop drama where technology has allowed crime to surpass the police force.
Siberia. Cross between survivor and lost. Fictional reality show that turns out to be more than meets the eye. Sitting in limbo for season 2.
The river. Was kind of like lost, with the found footage angle, but wasn't that bad.
Person's unknown. Another more than meets the eye mystery drama that built and built with a wonderful narrative and direction but never left any closure.
The americans - about two kgb spies posing as americans set in the 80's. Very well done.
Couple others you may have missed, orphan black and continuum.
alot here to try and respond to, thank you for your detailed list of suggestions. well lets get started
Penny Dreadful I think I'll be giving a chance, I actually still have episode 1 sitting in a hard drive i have yet to give it a chance. If you can give it a whole paragraph just for me, some rando, i guess i can give the show a chance.
I have seen the rest of them besides Siberia and The River, but well i dont much like reality shows at all. (they're all fictional whether they admit it openly or not.) that "found footage angle" as you put it is just a cheap way to keep budget down and it really bothers me.
I did skip The Americans. It seemed like another time piece idk i may watch it but we'll see if it sticks.
I really like almost human and i was really disappointed last year when i read it wont be getting a season 2. I enjoyed Above and Beyond, idk if it was so low budget like you say; it's all relative. The show seemed pretty good for the level of technology at the time. It's some sci-fi that would make neil tyson cry. But if you force yourself through a couple first episodes its not hard to finish. I'll be keeping up with Orphan Black and Continuum both i very much enjoy but are very different. Continuum reminds me of one of my favorite video games "deus ex" with similar tech and all. Person's Unknown was alright, but ild never recomend it to anyone. It barely got started when they pulled the plug and it wasnt really that great.
anyway thanks i'll check out penny dreadful. i wasnt expecting to pull anything else out of this thread but i appreciate it I'm always running out of stuff to watch.
