It's called a crossguard lightsaber. They were introduced in the comics. Albeit with only one extra blade.
The comics are considered canon, so this isn't something out of no where.
As it's been shown in many fights, the blade can slide down and take your hand and that crossguard is meant to deflect it. It can also be used offensively.
Before anyone comments about lightsabers cutting through anything, there are 3 materials that have been implied to stop a lightsaber in the star wars universe.
Phrik, cortosis and mandalorian iron.
Palpatine's lightsaber was made from phrik. So cross sections can made fashioned from those materials and stop a lightsaber blade in it's tracks.
Also note that this is being wielded by a sith lord, so I think he can make it work.
What are the weapons in Old Republic made out of? Mandalorian Iron? I forget the exact name...it starts with an "E." Etherium? Ebonium? Something like that.
