if the best Comedy series ever was Seinfeld - Complicated story? or was it just about a Guy and his Friends + Frienemies?
Cheers - Story was about a bar and the people who frequent it - Complicated?
Mash - Hospital in War
Elementary - Smart guy solves crime for NYPD
Dexter - Analyst for Miami police , finds personal justice
Breaking Bad - Teacher learns about selling drugs
Coronation Street 40+ years on tv) - English town life

should I go on?

I'm convinced you might be soft in the head. I didn't want to jump on the flame train, but it seems I have no choice.

I shouldnt have to explain why a broad, generalized statement like "t.v. is all about characters" is complete bullshit. Not every television show requires a rich narrative, and not all are completely character driven. Often times producers think a show can be carried by character, ignoring narrative, and by the 4th or 5th season, the only people still watching are soft, and mindless individuals who use broad, generalized statements about complex forms of media.

not every tv show - only 99.9% of them, Name a TV show where Story > character or name a show where the story can't be explained in ten words?
And all stories are driven by Narrative - that still doesn't change The Story. They aren't the same word because they are not the same meaning.

But what is interesting , is that you think tv is a complex form of media and thats funny.
maybe this is why you wear that protective hat , plz dont damage your brain anymore.

Narrative is literally defined as "a story"

Name a show thats story can't be described in ten words? Cosmos. I mean, it's the Fucking story of everything. Actually. Maybe you could help me with something. Describe lost, use as many words as you like.

No, I think my tv is a media device, with the potential to provide many possibilities. I'm fortunate enough to have more than 1 channel, so I get more than one type of viewing experience.

I think you've derailed, bud. You're not defending your original position. An interesting narrative, as well as a defined and interesting character, are crutial to some people. I am not rushing to my television each week to see what's happening to Greg House. It's bland storytelling, cliches, and predictable formula cannot be trumped by its lead character. I don't care if this time it is lupus.

When i say the word "story" , i'm referring to the super general overall storyline - and not the actual events that the characters go through in order to tell that story. I think of that as the Narrative. I know people use the word "story" when they actually mean Narrative , but they words have slightly different meanings , so there is a difference and i think you know what im talking about.

Narrative can be "a story" but more specifically it is the actual account of events.

The story - as in short for "the storyline" as in not the entire event(s) - just a general synopsis of what's going to happen.

And yes it would apply to Lost and any Documentary.

Nice try though.

were not - were arguing about the word story vs the word narrative

I say there is a clear difference and i am right

as always.

Were also arguing about American Horror story - that its not cliche and one factor in determining that is the number of awards it has from people in that industry.

(Not the # of People Choice Awards it has)
