In episode 1 Ford said "a simple handshake would give them away," then when he shook Bernard's hand in the church while he was giving him the maze the handshake was not normal. You can watch Bernard's facial expressions as Ford asks if he understands; he makes a subtle eye expression like the one he was pointing out on Teresa in an early episode, making it seem as if he knows what is happening
