He killed Quohorin because Quohorin commanded him to do it and join the wildlings for information. Now, he had all the information he needed, and the command was obeyed, he needed to escape at that point anyway (to warn Castle Black). The old man would have just been an unnecessary cold blooded murder whose only purpose would be to maybe grant Jon another day with them, which he didn't need. Cold blooded murder is a pretty damn big deal for a good-hearted person like Jon.
