I do not believe that in a realistic high school environment a good looking girl would be ostracized and bullied by all the boys in her class

Do you think the show portrayed her being "ostracized and bullied by all the boys in her class?" Clearly she wasn't happy about the way she was being treated. But I think the show tried to send the message that while she was getting some bad treatment, there were some distortions in her perception that made things feel worse for her than they really were.

For example: The fact that Alex's list ended up getting passed around doesn't exactly qualify as Hannah getting "bullied". Guys say stuff all the time. One of her mom's first responses to the list was "it's kind of a compliment". Obviously it makes sense for Hannah to be devastated emotionally, but it's not a clearcut case of her being ostracized by other kids. If such a list had been passed around a professional work setting, a 30 year old woman would not have such a negative reaction to being voted 'best ass'. The show makes sure that things are complicated, Hannah experiences various degrees of things that are somewhat bad but primarily it's about how she reacts to them.

Having people pass around a paper commenting about your ass is sexual harrassment whether you take it as a compliment or not.....

I'm not saying she should take it as a compliment. I clearly said that she should be emotionally devastated by it. I'm saying that no guy set out to hurt her. A guy wrote stuff that ended up getting passed around. The ostracization that she felt was not perpetrated by anyone. This is the kinda shit that ends up happening in high schools.

zarkadon claimed that all the guys were bullying her, but I didn't really see things as being that clearcut. What the counselor said to her in the last episode was heart-breakingly gut-wrenchingly insensitive, but he was just a guy who made a mistake at his job. He killed her, but he didn't know what he was doing.

I was agreeing with you, I didn't make that very clear though. However i just wanted to state that it is sexual harassment anyways.

And yes, a situation like that can very much happen in any high school (or worse).

iirc the guys were either ignoring her, trash talking about her, or making air-humping gestures behind her back. Of course they weren't treating her like the treat the photograph pervert weirdo guy, but they weren't treating her like they would treat a cute girl in highschool. The only guys that are shown treating her correctly are Clay and his mexican friend. And yet they don't spend much time with her.

I don't really care about the list thing when it comes to bullying... other girls in the class where in it too, so it's not something specifically about Hannah... and it's something that has no harm intended to it, and a normal thing to do in high school (I remember doing stuff like that about girls, and girls doing stuff like that about us guy... not really a big deal and I remember laughing it off with my gf about what each of the guys and girls thought about the looks of everyone in our class... I could imagine something like ranking from best to worse hurting the self esteem of the lower ranked guys/girls though). So I'm mostly talking about the direct interactions guys have with her... they are either ignoring her or hostile. That's what I think the show portrays, and I don't think it's realistic that there weren't any white knights or people willing to befriend a cute girl, in a highschool environment.

One of the major aspects of the list that you aren't mentioning is that her best friends boyfriend put her ass on it which lead to her and ber best friend no longer being friends. That's definitely more impactful than any 'not really a big deal... laughing it off' experiences that you mentioned.

Yeah, but that's her best friend's fault, not the list's.

It could have been her bf voting for Hannah on the list, or it could have been him checking her ass out at a party Bill Clinton style.

Obviously the friend was insecure, the list was still the catalyst though. Saying that it was meaningless or played no part or that it is just silly is ignoring the issue which is very clearly there.

I mean if someone throws a match on a pile of gasoline cans and burns down a building he can't really say 'well it isn't my fault I just threw the match, there shouldn't have been gasoline around!'

The list is sexual harrassment. This is exactly what the show is trying (and successfully) to convey. This type of behavior is NOT okay. You're trying to justify that it's okay because it happens in a high school atmosphere, and while yes, it does happen in a high school atmosphere, it's not right.

Like cat calling.....it's harrassment. Maybe "some" girls enjoy it, but most don't.

This show's main objective is to show various types of bullying or harrassment, and how they can negatively impact someone, in addiction to showing that people may not think they are bullying or harassing, but they are.

Not trying to be rude or a dick, but this show is directed to you.
