I think what might be going on here is that the plotlines from the first 3 novels were more coherent and interconnected. Now that all that is wrapped up, people are less enthusiastic about having to get into the new stories from books 4/5.

It's sorta true that King's Landing goes from being a great story in first 3 books > then in Book 4 everyone leaves and it becomes mostly Cersei emo'ing around the palace fretting about Tyrion and flipflopping about wanting more dick from Jaime.

Dany, Brann and Theon have all been pushed further ahead whereas King's Landing is just now breaching that transition.

If you watch the show like its a Xena/Hercules show it becomes much more enjoyable.

Its hilarious that this one scene which actually serves a good narrative purpose and shows almost nothing is getting decried.

More so that the story has deviated heavily as well as reduction in quality and it can be viewed as a campy fantasy show rather than some intelligent geopolitical series.
