The necklace was a gift from Sam to Dean. Sam had originally intended to give it to their dad on christmas, but he never showed up so he gave it to Dean instead (and Bobby had given it to Sam so he could give it to John in the first place).
Also Michael used John as a vessel, so not sure if your theory of him being God's vessel works; besides why would God need a vessel?
