Really good movie, I would recommend everyone to see this. Really need this movie in current times. You’ll see what I mean once you see it.

Phantom Thread (2017)

I watched it because it is Daniel Day-Lewis' last performance, although I hope he does come out of retirement at some point in the future and, of course, because it's directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The best part of this movie is the subtle drama and interaction between the characters. It's so fucking awkward to watch at points and I give respect to the lead actress, forget her name, for keeping pace with Lewis here and adding quite a bit to the film. In fact, had it not starred Lewis and had a lesser actor playing his part she would have made it worth it.

Ultimately I was kind of bored here. The narrative centered around a dress maker probably wouldn't have made me want to watch it had it not had the pedigree that it did. There were some awesome shots, of course, and technically some scenes reminded me a lot of Kubrick films, particularly A Clockwork Orange and The Shining. A lot to like technically but I didn't finish this one blown away by the story or anything.

Probably will watch again in a few months.

Rio Bravo (1959)

Apparently this was made largely as a response to High Noon, which John Wayne hated because of its attack on Hollywood blacklisting. Given this it feels tempting to weigh them both side by side as though they both make an attempt at the same thing, but really they seem like they go for two different goals. High Noon is obviously a bit more serious and an attempt to be relevant whereas Rio Bravo is more of a feel good "buddy" type movie. I like Dean Martin's portrayal of a drunk and his relationship with John Wayne was kind of cool. Wayne plays himself, shocker, yeah, but it worked here because the supporting cast was cool and that lead actress was pretty damned hot. I like the seemingly random, chaotic circumstances that led the main characters to be in that particular time and place, as well.

Bit long at 2 and a half hours but it is a solid buddy movie with some really warm sequences.
