Remember "Friends"?
People would probably say it is sub-par if aired today but it is fairly praised overall.

I think shows are pretty similar quality

Friends was and still is really great. It did something few series have ever managed: create character development without turning against what it was in the beginning.

It introduced the image of functional non nuclear families to the masses. Even today, no other shows addresses concerns about same sex parents like Friends did, without demonizing, angelizing, or making a walking caricature out of gay people.

It did a lot of things right that even today's TV is still struggling with

Meh I never really liked friends. Also Big Bang Theory was good until it realized it was getting big and stopped writing for its initial target audience of geeks/nerds and started writing for everyone

I agree with your opinion of the show and I can see how it would be confusing. But think of it this way: Look at a mcdonald's dollar menu burger then ask why millions of people buy that trash every day

At least McDonald's fills a need we have to fill to survive. While it's completely shit food, it's cheap and quick and an easy thing to get when you forget to pack a lunch and you don't want to spend $15-$25 on something that's actually good.

It's never been for "geeks". They just took the same 3-4 cliches and repeated them over 10 seasons.
