I've never heard of a good movie maker saying they had to make shit up to put in the movie because it wasn't long enough. Usually it is spending hours agonizing over what to cut because the movie is too long. In that sense making a great tv show is significantly easier because you can put everything in without cutting as much meaning you can easily fully tell your story.
The problem is most shows either go on far too long because of studio contacts or selling out your idea, or just aren't good in the first place. If you have a fantastic story to tell and an unlimited budget it would be far easier to make it a great TV show because of previously stated reasons.

But I mean look at anime, your personal opinion on the art form aside, there are many anime series and many anime movies that are extremely great, but the amount of great series probably > film because budget isn't really an issue for anime in Japan.

I would only agree that quality TV is hard because of budget. But it isn't that the budget isn't there, it's that it is given to shit places. Like no studio is going to give some random show the same money they give the big bang theory, but a notable director could persuade a studio into investing in his movie.

/e:Also there are completely different factors to account for. Like if I'm feeling like a drama then I'll watch a movie because it's emotional but not overwhelmingly so. I mean 50-60 hours of getting your heart crushed is just too much. Isomer if Manchester by the sea was a series. Holy shit I couldn't imagine binge watching that as a series, talk about ways to become suicidal. But on the same note sometimes you just want to watch a cheesy feel good thing. To me the flash is a perfect example of that. You get attached to characters and so cheesy stuff that might be annoying in a movie where you don't feel as attached to the characters actually works. There are completely different things to take into account when deciding on value for a movie or show.

Not OP related but i watched this last night, it's depressing and 'real' to some extent... but i don't get the rave reviews it has received. (Casey Affleck was immense, granted)

I don't really watch anime so idk much about it. I guess if you consider the first Avatar show an anime... Which surprisingly was pretty good for a children's show.

You're missing out on some of the best art out there by skipping anime. Give it a try man, happy to recommend some if you decide to take the plunge.

I thought it was really well done. Super depressing and not at all fulfilling. The end didn't leave me with a sense of completion, more like wow life sucks sometimes. But I guess that was the point. Casey Afflecks character suffers more than anyone really should have to if life was fair

His nephew was having too much of a good time to make me feel anything towards him or his circumstances. Afflecks character was tragic for sure, he had more than a rough time of it.

Fav scenes were the conversation with his ex wife (the second one where she poured her heart out - his reaction was incredibly human)

and

When he tells his nephew he just can't beat it. Perfect.

The flashbacks worked well sometimes, only sometimes though. I do think the fire flashback should have been revealed as the movies parting scene. Some of them just came out of nowhere when he was engaged in mid conversation with people though, which kept tripping me out. I get that this was intentionally done to show us how broken and unhealthy he is but still..dunno, just didn't think it always worked.

It's worth a watch for sure, does not follow the norm and the unsatisfactory no payoff ending is refreshing.

bit pointless, but you could have gone with condensing*

His point stands though, it was never going to work

Are most of the good ones in other languages with only subtitles? I don't even know which ones are the good ones either tbh. I'll check it out eventually I'm sure.

you can watch the majority in dub or sub - but the general consensus is watching with subs is better and i agree for the most part (i think the only anime i've ever preferred dubbed is dbz, back in the day)

Do it

Yeah those scenes were so well done and not overdone like some directors/actors might have been. Extremely emotional but not over acted. The end is so unsatisfying it's unreal, the whole I can't beat it thing like fuck. Zero closure, fuck you film. But as I said, I think that's part of why it's getting a lot of praise, it feels like a real situation and not a movie. Like I can imagine this situation actually taking place.

Phone autocorrected, I don't proof my posts on here lol.

This idea was idiotic and I'm not sure why anyone would be dumb enough to have hopes for it.

Watching in subs is just dumb as fuck when a dub is available. Here! Distract youe eyes from the art work to read words at the bottom of the screen because your arrogant ass would rather audibly hear a language you can not even understand! Fucking weebos.
