Everyone's got a different taste. For me it wasn't so much the weird son and mother dichotomy, nor the graphic violence, nor even the fact I trusted Refn before I even watched the movie. Spoiler alert; watching Ryan Gosling get fucking slain like that in hand-to-hand combat was just awesome.
Yes, I know he didn't actually die there. I mean it metaphorically. He was just owned. But there was a lot more besides that for the movie to be good to me.
I thought Kristin Scott Thomas was amazing in her role, and the symbolism all across the movie made me think a lot deeper more constantly than movies of late. Again, this is all opinion.
I can't understand why you wouldn't like it ;P
See, I see places on the internet talk about all the symbolism in the movie and if you didn't like the movie it is just because you are too stupid to understand it. But I saw all the symbolism and none of it was earned. Nothing in the movie felt like it belonged or was earned. It all was just a bunch of meaningless shit hidden behind some failed wannabe "deepness" that the movie didn't actually have. Imo.
And gosling's performance felt like it mimic'd his character, in that he was basically the only one in the film that didn't give a fuck and didn't want to be there but was forced.
I guess that is partly why the movie failed imo, so much of it was centered around his character and he literally didn't care. His character was doing things he didn't give a shit about basically to get his mother to shut the fuck up. How can you expect an audience to care or get engaged in that kind of setting?
