tbh, with the light of how the walkers were created (last episode I think? or the second to last... semi-spoiler ahead btw) I think it is the Mother Nature itself. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes are the White Walkers. And they're rising against us because WE caused it, due to our selfish need for gasoline and other energy consumption. We are destroying our planet.

i get grrm's feelings toward war and how horrible it is, often never resolving conflicts, but i dont think the walkers will win tbh

Maybe he doesn't like it but he most likely also understands that killing one of the favorite characters off probably isn't a great idea
