OK who knew I had to specify, really outdone yourself today.

The number of people that know the hobbit story > the number of people that know the Warcraft story.

The Warcraft story started looking before world of Warcraft. The number of people who played Warcraft from the very start wc1 is most likely <100,000 (just a guess).

But the hobbit is a book that is taught in schools and most people have read it at least once. Plus the majority of people who have subscribed to wow don't give a shit about the lore, let alone lore that happened before there mmo started.

I said Warcraft started 22 years ago, obviously I know it came before wow......

Youre generalizing about people "not giving a shit about lore." You really have no idea.

You pretty much stated what I already stated about the hobbit being popular literature.

Still, like I said, Warcraft as an entire game series is extremely well known and Wow is the most famous and known mmo to date (notice how is didn't say first mmo).

The point I was making is the hobbit is almost forcibly known and Warcraft isn't.

Also if you think that

People who don't give a shit about the lore > people who like but don't know it really > people who actually put time into learning the lore

Isn't the best most likely correct assumption about wow players then you're lying to yourself. A lot of people might know the wow lore sure, but most people who play wow do so as a social thing not as a story driven game experience(actual scientific studies on mmo players have proven this).

Plus that doesn't even take into amount the people who would look outside of the game for additional lore aka lore from before the game aka the story the movie is covering.

^ Heavily disagree with the Hobbit being more well known....

I've never met a single person IRL that could tell me a damn thing about the Hobbit, and I've only met a handful of people online that know a damn thing about it.

I'm not saying everyone is an expert on WoW lore or anything, but it's a widely popular game and it'll have a huge draw. I think at it's height WoW had something crazy like 1x million subscribers, and it's had tens of millions in total. There's also shows like South Park which have widely increased the number of people aware of the franchise.

Edit - The movie still looks bad, but there's no denying the potential market behind it.

After seeing the trailers and judging the reactions I've read, I'm comfortable with choosing The Hobbit as the most apt comparison for Warcraft. Even though Warcraft's budget is much smaller, the look and feel of the CGI seems about the same to me. Also, the fantasy genre and strength of the brand lands it closer to the Hobbit than other heavy CGI action scifi/superhero films.

The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey scored-
64% from RT critics
83% from RT audiences
7.9 IMDB

I'd be curious to see what you think it will score if you care to offer up your guesses.

The main question I'm looking at is what its reception (relative to the expectations) will mean for the chances are of it getting a sequel.

Wow has a hugeeeee fan base I believe it will do well maybe not as well as lotr but i believe it will fall in line if not better than the hobbit films.

I would agree that the number of people familiar with the plot of the Hobbit > the number of people who know the story of what is going to happen in this Warcraft movie.

But the overall strength of the Warcraft brand is pretty comparable to the Hobbit in 2016. Between the games, commercials, South Park, and word of mouth, most people are familiar with Warcraft as a fantasy universe.

expectations prior is just theorycrafting. It's just hype and mostly blind opinions.

Yes, that's Hollywood. Hype and blind opinions are the important factors that control perception and determine which future projects are pursued.

Knowing that "Warcraft" is a thing is A LOT different than actually knowing anything about it.

This all started because I said how close the story sticks to the lore will matter only for fans, but the much bigger group of people aka the general public won't care about how faithful it is.

I don't know why people are trying to argue with me that people knowledgeable about the lore > the general movie watching public. It is obviously the reverse, I guess that just proves how dense some people on here are.

Tea, that's why I separated the 2 lines in my post with the word "but". There has been some confusion over that distinction in this thread. Go back and check this post http://forums.d2jsp.org/user.php?i=321372 and notice which part of your quote stupidkid282 bolded. The wording on that line was a bit muddy.

You guys probably don't disagree as much as you think, the distinction between the two just isn't being made clearly enough.
