Dexter is the exception to the rule on "character development". In the sense that from the beginning of the show, he himself has stated that he is devoid of emotion and that helps him not get caught. He is calculated in virtually everything he does. Now, that is not to say that I am not all for him showing more emotion due to that particular situation and him having a child. But, that scene itself seemed very random and pointless to the shows development and only seemed to have a negative affect on the perception overall.
This was only amplified for me during this last episode with that airport scene. And now has me semi worried for a continuity of the rest of the season. Although, I will keep watching because of my love for the show itself. Even if the writing is getting sloppy in my opinion. That's all I was saying.
Dexter said himself that he shouldn't be doing this (killing the guy at the airport), but it's what keeps him "sane" per se. He has to feed his Dark Passenger. The real-life Dexter cares about Deb but the Dark Passenger clearly doesn't.
