I saw an interview right after watching the show with either the show runner or author not sure which. He brought up the names of like 10 kids and talks about how they all committed suicide after basically begging for help and not getting it. Amanda Todd was one of the names he mentioned and I remember that story blowing up on the internet. The girl made a video taking about how she needs help and can't handle it and all the adults in her life ignored it and the kids just used it as fuel to bully her more. Pretty fucked situation. There definitely needs to be a better support system in place for people.
Telling me to fuck off because I'm asking you to read my previous comments (as I have been the most frequent poster in this thread) is not very bright.
The show touches a little bit with social media, of course, with how quickly texting can happen and rumors can start.
I feel bad for kids these days.
When I was in school, if something (bad) happened, it might be talked about for a couple days, and then forgotten. Now, it's videoed, pictured, texted, plastered all over social media and YouTube, and can continuously be damaging to the victim. Facebook didn't exist until I was in college, and then, you had to have a college email to access it.
This all leads me to say that any online support system just doesn't work, and will not work. As brilliant as the Internet has been, it's such a miserable place. Unfortunately that leaves people with teachers, and friends, which neither can be that reliable. It all comes down to good, caring parents who put their children first. This didn't help Hannah, but it could have helped Alex, and good parenting definitely helps preventing bullys.
When all is said and done, I unfortunately, truely believe that bullying and harrassment is going to continuously get worse, and I don't even have any suggestions on how to fix it. Conversation in a healthy atmosphere could help a lot, but that requires a lot of courage from those who are hurt in some form.
I still fully support the show showing different types of bullying and harrassment and hopefully it opened up some eyes on how not to treat people. I think morals are down. Never in my life have I ever cat-called, nor touched a female in an unwanted way, and I knew from a very young age right from wrong in that context.
