Here's what the characters need to create: Gut Suits.

Take some sort of protective clothing (beekeeper gear, sports equipment, something like that) and slap some zombie guts over it. When the material dried up/decomposed, they could clean it up a bit and refresh it with some new stuff.

This would allow them a fairly easy means of taking it on and off as necessary to move around.
